Our school takes the time to not only inform students but also the parents. The very first day of school parents and students are asked to read a paper together that is somewhat of a "pledge". Parents and their child read the paper that informs them about our computer policy at school and asks both the parent and the child to sign it. This form explains our school's computer policy and the consequences for using the computer inappropriately. In my classroom, we spend the first few weeks learning not only how to use the computer but also how to use the internet. We talk about what bad sites are and good sites are and how they can access good sites. This information is also shared with the parents at our Back to School Night so that they can continue to encourage and promote safe computer use at home.
1a. List at least 2 ways in which you can improve your role as a digital citizen. I can improve my role as a digital citizen by sharing the information I have received with my students. I plan to share the Faux Paws video with my students because it is something that they can relate to and that will interest them. It's a great way to talk about internet safety on a level that is appropriate for them. I also plan to use my Web Literacy Lesson on Trackstar. Trackstar is a great tool that promotes internet safety and this will allow me to hold a discussion with my class on only being able to visit the sites that I have tracked for them.

Although it is geared toward upper grade levels, it is still something that I can reference to help make sure I am sharing the correct information with my students. The Fairly Use Tale and Faux Paws sites are also great to use a resource and to share with parents for their use at home as well.
